May 4 - 10 is Be Kind to Animals Week!

Celebrate your pet, or just your love for animals this week as part of the American Humane Association’s “Be Kind to Animals Week”! (that link has some great ideas for how to be kind to animals, in addition to the ones I came up with for this article!) Hopefully, this will bring an extra boost of your attention to your pets this week in addition to the love and kindness you show to them every other week of the year.
Unfortunately, there are many people out there who aren’t showing their pets or animals the respect and kindness that they deserve, so this also stands as a reminder to everyone to help raise awareness and speak out for those who are unable to. Here are some ways that you can be inspired and take the steps to help improve the quality of animals’ lives in your home and community:
- Take your dog for a walk. Of course, if you have a dog, you probably do that every day, but take some extra time this week to really enjoy your time together, and maybe play a game in the park or take an extra lap around the block.
- Look into volunteering at your local animal shelter or rescue site. If you don’t have pets, or even if you do, you can bring great joy and fulfillment to your life and the life of animals by even just stopping by once a week to help take shelter dogs out for a run, pet the cats, or change the bedding for the small animals.
- Take action if you see animal abuse or mistreatment. If you go to the zoo and see unsanitary conditions, or if you’ve been feeling suspicious about the way your neighbors treat their pets, contact your local animal rescue or police department and tell them what’s going on.
- Take some extra time to play with your pets. If you have a cat, you can find fun in many household items that can be used as toys. If you have a bunny or guinea pig, give them a bit of extra floor time or purchase some high quality timothy hay (that’s the kind I get for my piggies. They love it!).
In other words, pamper your little ones and help to celebrate the week that’s dedicated to them! How are you celebrating Be Kind to Animals Week?
