Exotic Pet Spotlight: A Pet Anteater?!
May 9th, 2008 by omidog
Oh my goodness! I was planning on writing about something else today, but my coworker just showed me this picture, and I had to share it with you all. (The original can be found here)

Now, this got me thinking — obviously these anteaters weren’t just scooped out of the wild and dressed up in sweaters. Looking at those claws, I’d think it wouldn’t go over that easily with a wild one. So this means that people must keep anteaters as pets. I’ve never heard of that before, have you?!
A little Google sleuthing is all it took for me to find out that yes, indeed, anteaters can be found as pets, and…amazingly…their owners can be found describing them as “snuggly”. Look at all of these adorable pictures! Assuming it’s all legal and a unique circumstance where the animal wasn’t dragged out of the forest and forced into domestication, I think it’s actually kinda cool. (especially if you have an ant problem)
If you’d like to learn more about taking care of a pet anteater, there’s a great resource over at HubPages for you to check out. I guess that makes the more typical “exotics” like my guinea pigs seem a bit more mainstream now! Have you ever had an anteater or other unusual pet? And perhaps more importantly,…did you force them to wear sweaters?
The original can be found on Flickr account TamanduaGirl, they took it from there or her blog
oh and that Hub page is using one of TamanduaGirl’s photos and using her info to just pretend she has anteaters.
Thanks for the info, Cat! It’s so hard to figure out who’s who online these days. I wanted to be sure to give the right people credit for their pictures. I’m actually putting together an anteater Squidoo lens right now, it’s so funny that you left this comment just now!
Hopefully I’ll be able to provide some more accurate information about anteater ownership. It’s hard to find valid info since it’s such an unusual situation!
