Her female anteater was ill when young and would not have survived in the wild. The owner is one of the most knowledgeable non-zoo folks on anteater health and nutrition. She measures and balances absolutely everything that they take in and we watch the female go from scrawny with poor fur to a healthy and beautiful adult. They are NOT the right pets for everyone, but the government and laws shouldn't be the ones to make the decisions for them. The owner has made their house an extremely anteater friendly home providing areas for climbing, hammocks, etc., and through their mutual co-existence, the animal and medical experts have been able to learn much more about them as a species. And as a side note, I do some animal communication on an amateur basis, and I've communicated with both of those in the photos. They deeply love their owner and are very happy with her.

Thanks for the info, Cat! It's so hard to figure out who's who online these days. I wanted to be sure to give the right people credit for their pictures. I'm actually putting together an anteater Squidoo lens right now, it's so funny that you left this comment just now!

Hopefully I'll be able to provide some more accurate information about anteater ownership. It's hard to find valid info since it's such an unusual situation!
